Manchester United midfielder Toby Collyer suffers injury, set to be sidelined for a month – Man United News And Transfer News

Toby Collyer, tipped to breakthrough at Manchester United this season, has suffered an injury and will be sidelined for over a month.

The Manchester Evening News have not specified the nature of the issue but have revealed that the academy graduate will be out for “roughly a month”.

He joins fellow midfielder Mason Mount, former skipper Harry Maguire and both left-backs Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia on the sidelines.

The 20-year-old emerged as one of Erik ten Hag’s favourites with the former Ajax coach spotted in discussion with the youngster following United’s FA Cup triumph last season.

Collyer’s season so far

He proceeded to use the defensive midfielder extensively during United’s pre-season tour and was even present when the former Brighton academy star signed a new deal at the club.

He eventually made his Premier League debut when asked to replace Casemiro after the Brazilian endured a horror first-half in the game against Liverpool.

Collyer has made three appearances this season, including one at left-back against Barnsley in the Carabao Cup, with his last matchday squad appearance coming against Porto in the Europa League.

Collyer had spoken to club media regarding his progress this season. “It’s been great, I made the transition into the first-team environment, which is what I’ve always wanted to do.

“I’m focusing on working hard and trying to kick on and get into the squad. I remember being really thrilled and excited, buzzing [when training with the first team for the first time]. I kept thinking after the first few sessions I need to stay here, this is what I need to do.”

Tipped to make his breakthrough under EtH

He was spotted in the directors’ box during United’s 5-2 victory over Leicester City and was awarded his Premier League debut ball recently.

Ten Hag had earmarked Collyer as someone he could use in case Casemiro’s struggles continued but with the Dutch tactician’s exit, it will be interesting to see how the midfielder’s prospects change.

Ruben Amorim is set to take over from interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy and Manuel Ugarte, signed in the summer, is expected to see increased minutes in the heart of the midfield alongside Kobbie Mainoo when he eventually regains fitness.

But the Sporting Lisbon manager is known for his penchant for allowing youth products to excel and Collyer has impressed coaching staff at the club and there is no reason why he cannot impress the incoming boss as well.
